Here’s why so many people want to work at Google, Facebook...

Free food, a free gym to work off all that free food, subsidized massages and you can bring Fido to work. Those are among the perks that earned the Internet search giant Google GOOG first place among top companies for compensation and benefits, according to employee reviews on Glassdoor.

The U.S.-based job and career site allows employees to anonymously dish the good and bad on their companies and bosses, and also gives fairly updated salary levels.

Lots of reviews said Google, which earned 4.4 out of 5 stars, had a great working culture, with lots of growth opportunities. However, plenty complained about long hours and keeping a work/life balance, and others talked about Google just being a bit too heavy on bureaucracy.

The second-best place to work, according to Glassdoor reviewers, is not Facebook (hold your horses, it’s third), but Costco Wholesale COST . Sandwiched in between the two giant Internet companies, former and current workers gave the company high marks for pay and benefits for both part- and full-time employees. Of course among the cons listed, reviewers complained that the job can be pretty physical — “8 hours on carts is a little too much when the carts are 2x the size of others,” said one reviewer — and the hours aren’t family friendly, with lots of weekend work. Costco also got 4.4 stars out of 5.

Third was social media group Facebook FB +0.57%. Plenty of current employees gushed about a great atmosphere, along with free food,gym memberships, couches (for naps we presume?) and something called “baby cash”. And this former employee in Seattle had this to say about CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “At a companywide level, secret projects, public incidents, important non-public business metrics and the like are all openly discussed. You can ask questions about them directly to Zuckerberg at the weekly Q/A.” And that culture goes all the way down the food chain, that reviewer said. Cons basically boiled down to: “Don’t ever change.” Facebook earned a composite 4.3 stars among reviewers.

Rounding out the top five was software maker Adobe ADBE  at No. 4 and privately held health-care-software company Epic Systems.

At the bottom of the list were Union Pacific UNP  at No. 24 and eBay EBAY  at No. 25
